Author Tip to Creating Unique and Exciting Characters

APRIL 19, 2019

Happy Friday! This week flew by for me as I was involved in a television interview, I visited a friend, held a Meet and Greet, and prepared to go on vacation on a cruise. Oh, Happy Day! I finally am going to get on board the Royal Princess and sail away.

I love cruising and I love to write while I am on a cruise. I get inspired. Also, I get to people watch which is a bonus because I take a small writing tablet and start describing interesting people and couples that I see and develop characters around them. As an author, it is our characters that drive and propel a story. Therefore, I can't miss opportunities and not pick up on mannerisms, gates, dress styles, flirtation techniques and more. Therefore, my author tip for today is to take opportunities when you travel to "People Watch." Always jot down what they do, how they move, how the dress and more. When you get ready to create new characters, you have an arsenal at your disposal, I do the same thing with places I go and jot down how they smelled, the unique noises and the sites around them. Again, when you write, you can tap into your notes for inspiration.

Meet Rafael Humphrey

Today's author is Rafael Humphrey. I am excited to introduce him to you because he and I have several things in common -- we are both authors and come from a music background. When we tap into our skill sets as authors, the world opens up and there isn't anything that we can't write about. I was a teacher and principal during my early years and I tapped into that when I wrote numerous educational books. I also have tapped into my hobby of drawing and have created six adult coloring books. When an author does as I have done, it allows readers to learn from our experiences and that is precisely what Rafael Humphrey has done in his book Quit Your Job, Live Off the Music. Meet author, Rafael Humphrey.

Name of Book:’Quit your Job live off the Music
Year Published:2019
Publisher: self-published

Tell your readers a little about yourself, where you grew up, where you live now, where you went to school etc. Let them get to know the personal you.

I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio that’s where I was born and raised, but I have traveled all over the world. All my schooling was in Cincinnati. Even though I traveled to New York and Los Angeles a lot, I am still a Midwest boy. I didn’t get into music until a couple of years after high school I was a baseball all my life. I started out producing than writing then turned to an artist then consulting.

What inspired you to write this book?

My inspiration to write the book was from me being in the music business and consulting for up and coming indie musicians they would always ask me questions about the business, so I said how bout I put it in a book for you all.

Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?

When I did the Book cover, I wanted to have something that represented work as of a 9to5 job and something that showed what you could be doing in music — also showing the resignation letter confirming that you quit the job.

Who has been the biggest influence on you personally and as a writer?

My biggest influence has been all the greats I see on Youtube and on Vimeo and that I read about they get me to saying keep working hard.

What were your struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get this book written? One big obstacle I had to overcome is balancing everyday life while writing the book. So I had to write most of the book on airplanes because that’s the only place I couldn’t move around and do other things that come with life.

Tell your readers about your book.

My book will break down step by step of your process of how you can start making a living from your music; this is more like a self-help guide. Quitting your job seems a little bit overboard, but we have all the answer.

Who is your target audience and why?

My target audience is anyone who is wanting to learn how to make a living off music any age any gender.

If you were going to give one reason for anyone looking at your book to read, why should they buy it?

This book is a must buy because just to read it gives you the info for the time being but you will always have to go back to it for reference of your step to step guide so you want it for life.

What do you consider your greatest success in life?

I consider when I hit the Billboard charts as a producer for the first time is one of my greatest achievement in life.

Everyone has life lessons to learn, tell your readers one or two of yours and how they make you the person you are today.

One life lesson I learned in life is that no matter how hard you got it someone in the world has it worst. That helped me to realize I have it good no matter what.

What one unique thing sets you apart from other writers in your genre?

One thing that sets me apart from other writers in this genre is I'm not going to use any terminology that you won’t understand. I have done just about everything an indie artist has done so I know where you are coming from I am also in it to help you not only to sell books.

Tell your readers anything else you want to share.

On the release of the book, we will have a great book tour where we will be coming to a city near you.

Mike Pestano and his Book I am Enough -- 90 Days to Transformation

April 18, 2019

Dear Readers:

I am really excited for the following week as my sister and I take off on the Royal Princess out of San Padro, CA to Mexico. I will be taken by ship to ports of call that I have never been. I can't wait to board the ship and escape for eight full days of cruising. With that said, I won't be posting a blog for nine days so please be patient with me.

I had my Meet and Greet last night in Anaheim, CA and was graced with the presence of several friends that I haven't seen in over five years. We stayed up all night until 3:00 a.m. talking and sharing. Thank you, everyone, for your support. I will be going to many other places across the country so if you missed me here, stay updated through this blog.

Today my readers have the opportunity to get acquainted with a new author, Mike Pestano, and his book I am enough: Abundance of the Universe, published by Radhaa Publishing. If you may recall, several weeks ago,  featured the fabulous Radhaa Nalia and her publishing company and it is with pride that I feature one of her published author's books. Meet Mike Pestano.

Mike Pestano, and his book is called: I am enough: Abundance of the Universe
Book set to launch on Amazon and Barnes & Noble sometime in June 2019.

Name of Book: I Am Enough-90 Days To Transformation
Year Published: 2019

Tell your readers a little about yourself. Where you grew up, where you live now, where you went to school etc. Let them get to know the personal you.

I was born and raised in Manila, Philippines until my family migrated to Canada in 1989. In between those years, I also lived in Dallas from 1984-85 and attended college there. I’ve traveled a lot since I was a kid in the Philippines and saw many historical regions from North to South. I speak English fluently along with Tagalog, the national language but I can also understand a couple of other dialects. I attended Ateneo de Manila and Far Eastern University in the Philippines majoring in Business Management. In Canada, I attended Ryerson University and majored in Information Management. After formal schooling, I went into the business world in Toronto and then in Vancouver and added certifications in insurance, securities, and other investments. When I migrated to the United States in 2002 I added more certifications but this time in the field of nutrition, health, and fitness. Even though I battled weight problems growing up I was always active in sports like basketball, baseball, football, swimming, golf, and many others. Participating in sports helped hone my discipline and my perseverance and it culminated in my becoming co-captain of the varsity baseball team in college.

I’m the type to always be in learning mode and hungered for knowledge. My greatest passion though is reading and writing and that is reflected in every job I’ve had through the years whether as an editor or writer for the different companies I worked for. Even though I was a business major in college my best subjects were in English literature, composition, poetry, and writing essays. My other passion is health and fitness of mind, body, and soul and I hold certifications as a personal trainer, sports nutrition and weight loss specialist. I believe that the key to unlocking one's true potential is through the optimal performance of mind and body. The knowledge and experience I have enables me to teach and educate people about nutrition and fitness.

What inspired you to write this book?

This is my third book and it is inspired by the journey of transformation I’ve gone through in this lifetime. So many people are confused about the what, where, when, how, and why of losing weight permanently and reversing lifestyle diseases like type 2 diabetes. I'm living proof it can be done naturally and without medicine. There is so much misinformation and misrepresentation out there. My goal with this book is to cut through the nonsense and provide accurate and proven information. Yes, in 90 days one can truly achieve a paradigm shift and transformation of mind and body and that's what this book does.

Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?

This book cover represents the Phoenix rising from the ashes of the old and reborn into something powerful and authentic. I've always been fascinated by the different mythologies and Greek mythology captured my attention early. The Phoenix symbolizes renewal by obtaining new life through cyclical regeneration.

Who has been the biggest influence on you personally and as a writer?

My dearest friend Radhaa Nilia has been my biggest influence since my own Phoenix story of transformation. She inspired me to be the best and highest version of myself and this led to me becoming the person and writer I am. A woman of courage, integrity, honesty, true friendship, perseverance, and dedication to always growing and evolving.

What were your struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get this book written?

This is the actual program I created for myself back in 2011 to lose over 107 pounds. I used my vast knowledge of diet, nutrition and supplementation, and fitness techniques to create a 90-day transformation program that anyone can follow and adhere to. The biggest struggles and obstacles I faced were primarily mental and emotional. Losing weight is not just a physical undertaking. It takes a lot of mindset adjustment and learning to get rid of faulty belief systems that don't work. Losing weight was actually easier than maintaining it.

Tell your readers about your book.

It's a simple step-by-step guide for nutrition and exercise that won't starve you nor deny you your favorite foods. You don't have to spend endless hours in the gym grinding away every single day. Less is more. Anyone can achieve success and stop the yo-yo effect of past dieting efforts. Whether you need to lose 10 pounds or 50 pounds this program serves as a foundation to further transformation.

Who is your target audience and why?

My target audience here is those who are overweight/obese and struggling with lifestyle diseases. In particular, those suffering from type 2 diabetes will learn how to properly manage the disease effectively.

If you were going to give one reason for anyone looking at your book to read, why should they buy it?

I'm living proof that it can be done. Many books were written out there that sound great in theory. I'm a former type 2 diabetic who lost over 107 pounds with my own program. There's nothing more powerful than that.

What do you consider your greatest success in life?

It would be discovering my true authentic self and living my passion every single day. The freedom to do anything when I want, how I want, and where I want is priceless.

Everyone has life lessons to learn, tell your readers one or two of yours and how they make you the person you are today.

Be patient and grateful every single day while living in the now. Rushing through life and running at full-speed is a recipe for many mishaps. Yesterday's gone, tomorrow hasn't happened, so live fully in the now and be present!

What one unique thing sets you apart from other writers in your genre?

I believe the one unique thing is that I'm a living example of practicing what I preach about health and that I did it successfully my way in spite of the naysayers.
I understand you are collaborating with another author.

Tell me who that person is: Radhaa Nilia

What is the name of that book?

We are working on curating a book of individual stories of awakening called Awakening Starseeds-Shattering Illusions

What is it like to work with your partner?

I love working with Radhaa because she's honest, open, direct, and sees things in a different perspective I find refreshing and exciting.

You are Chief Technical Advisor at Radhaa Publishing and are curating a series of collaborative books. How can readers and authors contact Radhaa Publishing?

Lauren Dane's Book Goddess of Blade

April 15, 2019

I had a pretty exciting day flying from New Orleans to California and I am happy to say I love being in Cali. The weather is awesome and everyone I have met has been wonderful and gracious. I met several people face to face that I have only known through Facebook and social media so that was exciting.

Tomorrow is going to be just as busy as I have interviews and visitations with friends.

This blog is really short because it is 11:00 PM my time although only 9:00PM in Cali. I am going to bed and rest and get ready for a full week. With that in mind, you only have two more days for your chance to when KRONOS RISING from author Max Hawthorne. Be sure to subscribe and leave a comment for your chance to win.

I want you to meet a prolific author, Lauren Dane who has authored numerous books in different genres. She is an author after my own heart -- we love to write. Her book, "Goddess with Blade" is very exciting and I think my readers are going to love it. I hope you enjoy her interview, her book trailer and you take the time to purchase it. You won't be sorry.

Tell your readers a little about yourself, where you grew up, where you live now, where you went to school etc. Let them get to know the personal you.

The story goes like this: While on pregnancy bed rest, Lauren Dane had plenty of down time so her husband took her comments about “giving that writing thing a serious go” to heart and brought home a secondhand laptop. She wrote her first book on it before it gave up the ghost. Even better, she sold that book and never looked back.

You have numerous books and in different genres, what barriers did you face with your fan base when you crossed genres?

The only real issue is clearly signaling to the reader what type of story this is. That's done with a combination of cover art and blurb text.

What inspired you to author this book?

A taxi ride in Las Vegas.

Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?

That's down to the wonderful art department at Carina Press / Harlequin. I give them ideas but they turn them into art.

Who has been the biggest influence on you personally and as a writer?

The Norwalk Public Library.

Tell your readers about your book.

Goddess with the Blade is the first book in what will be a six book series. Each book has its own story as part of a larger meta-story. Each book takes off where the last book ended.

Meet Rowan Summerwaite. Vessel to the Celtic goddess Brigid and raised by the leader of the Vampire Nation, she’s a supercharged Hunter with the power to slay any Vampire who violates the age-old treaty.

A string of murders has her at odds with Las Vegas’s new Scion, the arrogant and powerful Clive Stewart. The killings have the mark of Vampire all over them, and Rowan warns Clive to keep his people in line—or she’ll mete out her own brand of justice.

Though her dealings with Clive are adversarial, Rowan is intensely aware of her attraction to him. But she can’t let it distract her from her duty—to find and battle the killer before more women die.

Rowan Summerwaite is the only person who can renegotiate the fragile Treaty between the Vampire Nation and the Hunter Corporation, the last line of defense for humanity. A meeting of the Joint Tribunal sends Rowan to the last place she wants to be—The First’s Keep.

Raised at the knee of The First, the oldest Vampire and leader of the Vampire Nation, Rowan must navigate Vampires and Hunters alike. And she’s got to do it while managing a politically awkward but undeniably deepened romance with Scion Clive Stewart…

Broken but not defeated by an ancient Vampire, a vengeance-fueled Rowan leads a team of some of the most terrifying beings on earth with one goal in mind. Eliminate the Vampire who attacked her.

But as the team is hit with wave after wave of attacks, the tensions between Clive Stewart and a rival Vampire ramp up, with Rowan the woman in the middle. She’s not used to being claimed, and Clive is everything she shouldn’t want in a man, but she’s past denying she’s in love.

In contrast to the uneven footing falling in love has given her, Rowan is utterly certain she’ll locate her quarry. Strong, powerful and connected to the Goddess, she burns with the light of her mission. There’s a war brewing, and Rowan will fight it to the death. It’s what she was born to do.

Though she’d hoped the deadly events in Venice would end the threat to the Treaty she’s sworn to protect, Rowan found evidence of a grander conspiracy—to destroy the fragile peace that holds humans, Vampires and those with magic back from war.

People try to kill Rowan all the time, but when those she cares for are at risk—including her new husband, Scion Clive Stewart—she gets angry.

The organization that once gave her a purpose has betrayed her. Now, instead of on a much-anticipated honeymoon, Rowan is in London, gathering allies and evidence. Whatever she needs to drive out the rot within Hunter Corp. and expose whoever is at the top.

Rowan is a predator and this threat is prey. She’ll burn it down and salt the earth afterward. On her terms.

Who is your target audience and why?

Fans of urban fantasy and paranormal romance will love this series.

If you were going to give one reason for anyone looking at your book to read, why should they buy it?

Rowan is the book hero you need in your life.

What book are you currently writing and when will it be published?

Currently working on book six of this series. Book five comes out in June 2019.

What do you consider your greatest success in life?

Staying sane while raising three kids.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

What one piece of advice do you have for new authors.

Butt in chair. Hands on the keyboard.
