Tell your readers a little about yourself, including where you grew up, where you live now, where you went to school, and so on. Let them get to know the personal you.
I’m August Clay, and my story begins across the Atlantic in Nigeria, where I spent my early years surrounded by rich culture and deep family connections. In 1995, my family and I moved to the United States, a shift that brought its own adventures and challenges. I started my journey in the U.S. schooling system in the 7th grade at O'Donnell Middle School—a whirlwind experience of new faces and learning to navigate a new world. By high school, I was firmly planting roots in Houston, Texas, first at Hastings High School during my freshman year, and then transitioning to Kempner High School, where I graduated. Each chapter of my life has been shaped by vibrant cultural influences, resilient adaptations, and a profound love for storytelling—a passion that blossomed years later as I transitioned from writing poetry to writing music to now crafting novels. I hold these experiences close to my heart because they’re a part of the fabric of who I am, and they inspire me to connect with others through shared emotions and stories.
What inspired you to author this book?
The inspiration for The House on Maplewood Lane came from a deeply personal place. Over the years, I’ve witnessed how unresolved trauma, and secrets can shape individuals and families, creating cycles that are hard to break. I wanted to explore this through a story that combines the suspense of a psychological thriller with a heartfelt exploration of resilience and redemption. The idea struck me one summer evening when I found myself engrossed in a novel that truly moved me. As I turned each page, a question formed in my mind: “What kind of story could I write that would challenge readers while also connecting with them on a deeply emotional level?” From there, the seeds of The House on Maplewood Lane were planted, and I poured myself into crafting a tale that captures both the terror of confronting one’s past and the strength it takes to move forward. This book is more than just a story to me—it’s a reflection of our capacity for growth and the courage it takes to find our voice, even in the darkest moments. I hope that it resonates with readers and inspires them to face their own truths with bravery and resolve.
Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?
The inspiration for the cover of The House on Maplewood Lane came
from the eerie, atmospheric tone of the story itself. I wanted the visuals to
immediately evoke a sense of mystery and unease, drawing readers into the world
of the house before they even open the book. The image of the weathered,
isolated house set against a dark and textured background mirrors the suspense
and haunting secrets hidden within its walls. The bold, red typography adds a
striking, ominous touch, symbolizing danger and urgency. It's designed to
captivate viewers and hint at the gripping narrative waiting inside.
Who has been the most significant influence on you personally and as a writer?
The most significant influence on me as a writer has undoubtedly been my father. His life, especially his battle with ALS, taught me profound lessons about resilience, hope, and the unwavering strength of the human spirit. Diagnosed in 2002, he faced his illness with incredible courage, never giving up even when things seemed impossible. His faith remained unshaken throughout his struggle, and that faith, along with his resilience, left a powerful legacy that still guides me today. His ability to persevere and the way he found joy in the smallest of moments inspire so much of my writing. I try to infuse the characters and stories I create with the kind of strength and heart that he showed me every day of his life. His influence is the foundation of much of what I want to express as a writer: the idea that even in the darkest times, there is always a way forward.
What were your struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get this book written?
This being my first time writing a novel, I faced a range of challenges
and obstacles. I’ve always enjoyed writing stage plays for small church
productions, so I had some experience with crafting dialogue and character
interactions, but writing a short story novel pushed me in new directions. I
quickly learned that I had to dig much deeper. I had to study the mechanics of
novel writing, especially around building characters, structuring the
narrative, and weaving the dialogue in a way that feels natural but also drives
the story forward. One of my biggest struggles was ensuring that the story
flowed seamlessly. Writing a novel requires so much more than just
dialogue—it’s about creating a complete, immersive world for the reader. I had
to be intentional about pacing and maintaining momentum while making sure that
each scene built on the last in a way that kept the reader engaged. Another key
challenge was making sure the underlying themes of trauma, abuse, and breaking
the cycle were presented clearly. These are such sensitive topics, and I wanted
to approach them with care and thoughtfulness. I worked hard to make sure the
message was powerful but not overwhelming, so that it spoke to people who may
be experiencing these issues, and to those who may not fully understand them
but can empathize with the characters' journeys. But in the end, each challenge
helped shape the book into what it is. Every obstacle pushed me to grow as a
writer, and I couldn’t be prouder of the final result.

What do you consider your greatest success in life?
I consider my greatest success in life to be my ability to step into the unknown and find purpose. Embracing uncertainty and pursuing new paths has allowed me to evolve, both as a person and as a writer. It’s one thing to dream of something—writing a novel, for example—and quite another to take the leap and make it a reality. Through the challenges and struggles, finding my voice as an author has been incredibly fulfilling. It’s that courage to venture into unfamiliar territory that led me to where I am today, and for that, I feel accomplished.
What one unique thing sets you apart from other writers in your genre?
As a debut author, I’m still on a journey of growth, learning, and making
my fair share of mistakes along the way. While I’m still finding my footing in
the world of writing, I strive to bring a unique perspective that captures real
human experiences. By diving deep into the emotional undercurrents of my
characters and the complexities of their struggles, I hope to offer readers an
authentic, heartfelt narrative that resonates long after the last page. My goal
is to leave an imprint that not only stands out in the genre but also invites
others to reflect, heal, and grow.
