Dr. Evelyn Hill - Author Interview

Dr. Evelyn Hill

Tell your readers a little about yourself, where you grew up, where you live now, where you went to school etc. Let them get to know the personal you.

What inspired you to author this book?

I was doing a podcast on a new series called “Breaking Through Layers of Injustice For Women.”  From those interviewed, I thought I could write a short book to let victims of sexual assault know, that it was NOT their fault.  They do not have to live in guilt, blame, isolation or desperation.  I believe the Lord gives a special “grace” to those who suffer from such injustice.

Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?

I believe I got the inspiration for the book cover from the beautiful picture of the ballerina. Later I found the picture of the beautiful ballerina with red boxing gloves, indicating that she was prepared to fight or had already been in a fight and won.

Later I saw in my mind her toes are on top of the word “rape”.  This graceful beautiful image shows power over rape.  The ballerina symbolizes the great grace and fortitude and resilience that will come to those who have been sexually violated.

Who has been the most significant influence on you personally and as a writer?

Maya Angelo has been the most significant influence on me personally.  I love her poetry and the many talents she used in spite of the injustices she had to endure. Maya’s story is amazing to me because she suffered sexual assault, experienced trauma for years and refused to talk, and later was inspired by one of her teachers to read and write until she finally began to speak again. She is an example of resilience and empowerment.

What were your struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get this book written?

I struggled with being focused. There were so many distractions and other things I felt I had to do.   Somedays I did not feel well, so that caused me to stop and rest and re-set myself.  There were other times I felt the book was not necessary. Feared that very few folks would be interested in reading it because so few people want to talk about this subject.

Tell your readers about your book.

The book is an inspirational book that offers tools and strength in recovery after a sexual assault.  There is no judgment in the book.  Only words of encouragement and empowerment.  The Lord loves us all and offers special grace for those who have suffered horrific assaults that cause trauma and despair.  This short to the point book is a breath of fresh air, offering tools for success.  The very introduction celebrates those who have endured rape and went on to do great things in their lives.

Who is your target audience, and why?

The target audience is teens and women and anyone else who has been sexually assaultedI realize that sexual assault does not just happen to females but to males also. So anyone who has experienced rape can benefit from reading this book.

If you were going to give one reason for anyone looking at your book to read, why should they buy it?

You can read it in less than an hour and come away inspired, encouraged, and empowered.

What do you consider your greatest success in life?

The greatest success in my life was becoming the president of the board of education in our county.  Along with raising my children and surviving some very difficult times in my life.

What one unique thing sets you apart from other writers in your genre?

What sets me apart from other writers is I am down to earth, practical and the book is less than 50 pages long.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

I get out of my normal surroundings and get someplace beautiful where I can see nature.

What one piece of advice do you have for new authors?

Just start writing.  Don’t worry about spelling punctuation and other things.  You can always do that later. Just write.  Begin with naming your chapters.  After that, go for it.

What is next for you in your writing career?

I have a podcast called Shades InJustice.  I want to write a book about the injustices in our country and some solutions I have discovered.
