SHARMILA |
What
is your style of music?
Pop R&B. The style can change; it depends on the type of song I wrote.
Who
or what has been your greatest influence on your style?
I
always loved artists who did sing and dance. My greatest influences were the
artists I listened to in my childhood. Your childhood creates the foundation
for the future and who you will become later in life. I listened to all types
of music, but I loved artists like Janet Jackson, Madonna, Paula Abdul, NKOTB.
How
did you get started in your career?
Music
was always important to me. In my childhood, I was interested in performing
arts, I took dance lessons for eight years and was always busy listening to
music and dancing every day until I couldn´t stop as I also wanted to become a
professional dancer. Later in life, I started writing my own songs and took
vocal lessons.
What
struggles or barriers did you face or are you facing to promote yourself and
your work?
In my
country, the Netherlands, they never seemed to understand who I am and what I’m
about. When you´re a woman of color, single mom, and woman artist, you´re in
big trouble. You can´t say that you´re an artist; if you say such a thing, you
don´t wanna know what will happen. So I had to work hard, let my intuition be
my guide to make things happen!
What
life lessons have you learned, and how have they influenced your style?
I
learned a lot; I just know better what I want and don´t want. I often write
about my own life experiences. My 2nd album is coming up with a new sound.
Provide
an example of your work that I can include in your interview.
