Becoming Tomorrow's Doctor: Essays on the Practice and Future of Medicine by Christopher M. Cirino

Becoming Tomorrow's Doctor: Essays on the Practice and Future of Medicine

by Christopher M. Cirino

What is it like to practice medicine?

What does the future hold for tomorrow’s doctors?

Dr. Christopher Cirino explains his journey into medicine to prospective medical students and the general audience.

The book Becoming Tomorrow’s Doctors describes how perception shapes reality and how training and technology bring doctors closer to understanding patients’ concerns more accurately. Dr. Cirino believes that the health paradigm will shift to a more holistic understanding of health as we increase our knowledge in neuroscience and epigenetics and develop tools to measure complex systems.

The book covers several elements essential for understanding a physician’s career. These include cognitive bias, medical errors, generalist and specialist, challenges in medicine, collaboration, empathy, and burnout. Included within the chapters are multiple cases that illustrate the topics. Dr. Cirino writes that empathy improves patient care by clarifying communication and closing the gap between cognitive bias and reality. Moreover, it increases rapport and satisfaction of both doctor and patient.

Burnout often leads to compassion fatigue and depersonalization as doctors strive to maintain an increasingly busier schedule. There are proactive ways future doctors can prepare for the rigors of medical school and training to prevent and raise awareness of burnout. Tomorrow’s doctors will view health from a vastly different perspective than today and use tools that enable a more accurate disease diagnosis and treatment. However, they must continue to uphold the foundation of the healing arts— the doctor-patient relationship.

Christopher M. Cirino, DO, MPH, is a board-certified physician in internal medicine and infectious diseases. He endeavors to explore solutions to the health care crisis and the burden of chronic disease. Dr. Cirino’s view of health centers on the root cause of disease. Drawing from the tenets of Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, he strives to guide his patients to find ways to heal from illness and reawaken their health.
He is the founder of Your Health Forum, an online medical reference that bridges wellness and neuroscience concepts. He holds seminars in the community and online that cover areas including infectious diseases, physician burnout, career advice, mindfulness, and understanding behavior’s role in health.

Dr. Cirino is a speaker, health coach, and lifelong learner. He received his undergraduate degree in Microbiology from Miami University of Ohio in 1994. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1998. Cirino participated in residency training at the George Washington University Medical Center from 1999 to 2002. At GWUMC, he trained in his infectious disease fellowship from 2004 to 2006 and completed his MPH at the GW Milken Institute School of Public Health.

Author of four children’s books, Dr. Cirino’s goal is to get the message of health empowerment out to people of all ages. He is a proud father of three boys, ages 15, 13, and 10, and lives in Portland, Oregon.

"Please Don't Jump"

by Deloris E. Jordan

Sometimes life hurts—a lot! Overwhelmed by its challenges and painful moments, there are days when just breathing itself seems to require more energy than we have to expend. It is in such times of despair and great exhaustion that we are pushed to the edge with thoughts of throwing in the towel and surrendering to whatever, or whoever can ease the pain or be a distraction. Sometimes giving little or no thought to what the consequences will be. Beckoning us away from that edge of dire distractions with a message of hope, resiliency, and the understanding that God has not allowed us to be confronted with any situations that we cannot overcome, Deloris E. Jordan uses this book which is filled with real-life experiences to encourage us to not give up on living. Turning our attention to our inner strength, she speaks of learning how intentional God was with gifting each of us life while reminding us that no one's life is perfect, but everyone's life has a purpose. Having jumped off the edge several times in pursuit of death when overwhelmed by her life, the author writes earnestly of surviving those dark moments, finding peace, and becoming immensely grateful to still be alive. As with her first book, In My Family Shadows, she grants readers an internal view of her personal struggle for survival with uncompromised transparency.

I can not thank Deloris enough for her “truth-telling”. As I read intently through each page I was deeply encouraged and began to receive peace for my own situations. A real spiritual exchange took place as I read her story and how she accepted God's final say in her life. The courage it takes to tell such a sensitive truth with the intention of encouraging other souls is nothing short of the Spirit of the living God residing within the beautiful vessel, which is Deloris E. Jordan.

As a woman of faith who faces life struggles in many ways myself, I stand on the shoulders of women like Deloris who yield beautifully to the life-changing power of our Heavenly Father. We truly are blessed to have Deloris here with us on planet earth. I’m sure I am one of many who are thankful that God's plans were greater than hers. Do yourself a favor and buy this awe-inspiring book now. It serves as a witness and testimony to a life worth living.

Twenty-Five Silver Rules for Mental Health

Tell your readers a little about yourself, where you grew up, where you live now, where you went to school etc. Let them get to know the personal you.

I was born in Yerevan, the capital of the Republic of Armenia. I still live in Yerevan and I am engaged in a creative life. I graduated from two higher educational institutions, one of which is psychological, with the qualification of a medical psychologist. I also write fiction, I have many books and articles; I have been doing psychology for about 30 years, and I have had many scientific articles.

What inspired you to author this book?

The inner freedom of a person was a source of inspiration for me, so that I could show the way to the reader in an accessible language and that there would be no fears, depressions, stresses, and failures in that way. The idea of this book has haunted me for many years. I read many scientific books, and professional books, but along with them, I wanted a book that would be accessible to the average reader. This book also has professional approaches that are presented for a simple, accessible reader.

Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?

The cover of the book kind of tells us what information is important to us and what is not. As if a person makes a free choice and believes in his success. All this was a source of inspiration for me.

Who has been the most significant influence on you personally and as a writer?

The writers Shakespeare, Byron, Dostoevsky, Botler, and psychologists Jung, Adler, and Maslow had a great influence on me.

What were the struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get this book written?

Continuous training was for me filled with difficulties and obstacles because I wanted to present the best book to the reader.

Tell your readers about your book.

The book mainly helps to find harmony in the inner and outer world. In addition to psychology, there are also philosophical aspects. How to look at the world, what is stress, how to get rid of anxiety, depression, etc. The book is new in its structure. There are many secrets in it. Do you want to see those secrets and be healthy and successful? A miracle happens when you yourself are ready to evaluate what you read.

Who is your target audience, and why?

My target audience is a mentally lonely person, with this book I am always with him, a lonely person has lost the desire to talk to himself.

If you were going to give one reason for anyone looking at your book to read, why should they buy it?

I would say that you need one word to change your life, if you are sad, just read it, read it several times, I am sure you will find your smile.

What do you consider your greatest success in life?

My greatest success is that I was able to serve people, serve unconditionally and I am happy.

What one unique thing sets you apart from other writers in your genre?

I differ from the writers of my genre in the ability to give freedom to the reader so that the reader can make a free choice in his ideas about life and move forward. Movement is already life.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

I overcome the writer's crisis with an internal conversation with the reader. My reader wants to hear and read the sincere, kind, and useful. That's how I live and of course, write.

What one piece of advice do you have for new authors?

I would ask the new authors to first of all be honest with themselves. And remember that you can't compose lines at every moment. You need patience and humanity.

What is next for you in your writing career?

The next book will be about anxieties and fears, how to understand them, how to deal with them and how to get rid of them, but I will keep silent about what will be in the book for now.

Tell your readers anything else you want to share.

I have a lot to say to my readers, I also say it through my books, to be brief and sincere: my reader's pain is my pain, joy is my joy, and I love my reader.
