ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Alana, Co-Founder of KidsRead2Kids and Editor in Chief of KidsRead2Kids Magazine, is a creative writer (and playful learner!) at heart. As a child with Selective Mutism, she struggled to speak to anyone outside of her immediate family. Now, through her educational nonprofit, she hopes to use her voice to inspire and uplift those like her. A graduate of Oberlin College, Alana holds her BA in Creative Writing with a concentration in Education. As a Business Scholar and Writing Associate, she trained in cross-disciplinary teaching practices and created original curriculum and activities. She worked in the community through the Writers in the Schools (WITS) Program at Langston Middle School, and as a local performing arts teacher. Alana continued to write and publish, later working with SEEN Magazine, where she wrote five print and 30 online articles. She has dedicated the last few years to accessibility in education, by co-creating KidsRead2Kids Magazine, and speaking to international audiences for the benefit of underserved students, teachers, and parents.

Carol, Executive Director of KidsRead2Kids, is living proof that passion is key to success for those who learn differently. Growing up with undiagnosed dyslexia and ADHD, Carol often felt misunderstood by teachers and inferior to her classmates. But her mother believed in her, enrolling her in coding classes at Foothill College at 12. A spark was lit, leading her to earn an MBA and a BS in Economics, concentrating in Finance and Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of Business, and a BS in Electrical and Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science, where she was a Sharp Fellow and General Motors Scholar. Before joining KidsRead2Kids, she worked as an Associate Consultant for Bain & Company, a Senior Consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton, and an Adjunct Professor of Management for Northwood University. Carol was also the radio host of Entrepreneurial Life. As a mother of five children with learning differences, Carol has immersed herself in interactive ways to learn and grow. Through KidsRead2Kids, Carol hopes to help educate parents, librarians, and teachers across the globe with lessons in mindfulness, exercise, nutrition, and positive play. She takes the fun even further as a Genius of Play Ambassador!

If you are tired of dry history, grab this gem; it's a rollercoaster that takes you from the roaring 20's to the silver screen, all with Thornton leading the charge. So buckle up, peeps and let's dive into the scandalous, dazzling world of The Merchant of Venus!

The Merchant of Venus is a captivating look at the life of Walter Thornton, a man whose legacy transcended ordinary perceptions. Unveiling the unexpected impact of an iconic image tied to the 1929 Stock Market Crash, the book introduces Thornton as a trailblazer in modeling, beauty, and advertising. From pioneering the first agency exclusively for photographic advertising models to shaping the cultural tides of Hollywood, Thornton's journey is a fascinating odyssey through triumphs and resilience. The book was put together and fueled by a quest to understand his tarnished reputation and delivers a poignant account of courage and creativity. I thoroughly enjoyed the book's ability to weave history, family, and societal influences into a compelling tapestry, making it a great read for those intrigued by the hidden chapters of influential lives.

There's nothing better than hearing a good life story. The Merchant of Venus was a GREAT life story.

Pulled into a book by the cover and the description I picked it off the NetGalley shelf and requested permission to read it. The following day I was nose-deep in a family mystery. I learned things I didn't know, I didn't know.

Thornton's daughters with the help of Mershon presented a solid, informative, interesting, and thought-provoking read. I was drawn at first, into this incredible family mystery. I finished the book, cheering for them as they sought truth, doing so, vigorously, with determination and patience. I applaud them for this. I can imagine that digging through the history of their father's life was both fantastic and frustrating. I'm sorry that they didn't know these things before their father passed. I'm sure they would love to sit down with him and hear his voice fill in the tiny details of a time forgotten.

I had difficulty midway through as the story felt a little repetitive and dragged, but I persisted and was happy that it pulled itself out of that moment to deliver a great ending....

Tell your readers a little about yourself, where you grew up, where you live now, where you went to school, etc. Let them get to know the personal you.

I grew up in a Haitian family in South Florida, and my childhood was tough. But I’m thankful for the support of my family and friends, who shaped me into who I am today.

Because of my own experiences, I started Deliverance Charities. Our goal is to fight poverty through community and economic development. This nonprofit is more than just a project I care about; it’s a way for me to give back and offer others a second chance. We’ve been trying to raise money for two main programs: Acts of Kindness and the Rebuild Program. But then COVID-19 made everything harder.

To keep spreading our message, we decided to share stories of the people we’ve helped in our community. At first, I thought about making YouTube videos, but it was too complicated. Then, someone suggested writing a book. That idea clicked with me. So now, we’re working on a series of books called “Tales from the Unfortunate” to tell our stories more powerfully.

What inspired you to author this book?

This is important to me and my team because some of it comes from our own experiences. That’s why I’m committed to this charity: to make things better in society.

Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?

I got the idea for my book cover from the amazing work of the illustrator I’m a fan of. She understood exactly what I wanted and brought the cover to life with her talent. It’s like she painted a picture that perfectly captures the feeling of the story. Working with her was great; together, we made the cover special.

Who has been the most significant influence on you personally and as a writer?

My sisters have had the biggest impact on me, both in my personal life and as a writer. They’ve taught me so much about life, love, and faith, shaping me into who I am today. Their stories and experiences inspire me to write with empathy and understanding. They’re my biggest supporters and my greatest source of inspiration.

What were the struggles or obstacles you overcame to get this book written?

Writing this book had its tough moments. First, getting it published through a nonprofit and raising money took a lot of time and effort. Then, learning how to tell a good story was hard because I had to figure out how it would affect readers and what they would think. But hearing feedback from others helped me improve the story a lot. Fixing and improving it over time was my favorite part. Finding the right person to draw illustrations was tricky, too, especially without a clear vision of what I wanted. Despite the challenges, the process was rewarding, and I’m proud of the book we made.

Tell your readers about your book.

The Scars of Abuse, part of the “Tales from the Unfortunate” series, delves into the complexities of love, illustrating how it can bring both joy and pain in relationships. Through compelling narratives, it explores the question: What does true love entail? Readers will find themselves immersed in thought-provoking stories that resonate with the highs and lows of human connection.

Who is your target audience, and why?

The target audience for this book includes those who enjoy love stories with elements of suspense and romance. It’s for readers who appreciate seeing characters grow from their decisions, reflecting the realities of life. Whether you’re drawn to captivating plots or character-driven narratives, this book offers a compelling journey that resonates with anyone seeking entertainment and depth in their reading experience.

What do you consider your greatest success in life?

My greatest successes so far are tied between two significant achievements. Firstly, we organized our nonprofit event, ‘Teacher Care Package Day,’ where we provided free school supplies to teachers and students at an elementary school. It felt incredibly rewarding to support our educators and young learners in such a practical way.

Secondly, seeing our first book published was truly magical. The story resonates closely with many people in our community, and witnessing its impact has been heartening. We’re already working on expanding our storytelling efforts, aiming to connect with even more individuals.

These accomplishments represent both our commitment to community service and our creative endeavors. They remind me of the power of persistence and the joy of making a positive difference in people’s lives.

What one unique thing sets you apart from other writers in your genre?

One unique aspect distinguishing me from other writers in my genre is my ability to infuse personal experiences and insights into my storytelling. Drawing from my journey and observations, I offer readers a fresh perspective that resonates deeper, adding richness and authenticity to my work.
