ABOUT THE AUTHOR

My name is Mai Lee but call me Michael, a proud Hmong and member of the Asian minority community. I was born in the Thai refugee camp in Thailand mid-August of 1985. At the tender age of three, my parents and grandma embarked on a new chapter in their story, immigrating to the United States with my sister and I. Settling in Akron, Ohio, since relatives were already there.
I grew up alongside my four siblings in a modest two-bedroom single-family house, a place I called home while navigating the challenges of speaking, writing, and spelling in English. Throughout elementary and middle school, I attended ESL classes. I learned so much from identifying items to asking and stating the correct sentences.
Television played an unexpected role in shaping my identity. As my family gathered around the screen, a show named Knight Rider captured our imagination. The show's lead character, Michael Knight, left a permanent mark, leading to a decision that would resonate throughout my life - to be known as Michael.
The education I received at Garfield High School in Akron shaped my future. During my sophomore year, I stumbled upon an opportunity that would ignite my future path. Observing my cousin navigate the complexities of a machine trade, I saw potential in the field. Underestimating the challenges, I signed up for the class, quickly realizing that success would require dedication and a lot of focus. Despite initial difficulties, I pushed myself to excel, eventually standing out with my impressive grades and perfect attendance. Recognizing my potential, my teacher recommended me for an internship at Timken Research in North Canton during my senior year. At the end of my senior year Timken saw diligence and commitment from me and offered a full-time position in the Metrology Lab. This marked the beginning of my professional journey in a distinguished company.
