Matadora: Latina Conquers America Paperback – June 20, 2023
by Ron Salvador (Author)
At the end of WW II, on a bull ranch deep in isolated and undeveloped Mexico, lives an extraordinarily talented young woman named JOAQUINA SANCHEZ, who has trained all her life to be a bullfighter. At seventeen, she may be the best matador alive, but she lives in total obscurity and isn't even aware of the fact that there is no such thing as a woman bullfighter. Her father, SALVADOR SANCHEZ, is her trainer, and he is the one who should've told Joaquina the truth, but somehow, he never has. When he first noticed her gift for the bulls, she was only eight years old, and there seemed to be no harm in letting her train with the other novilleros. By the time she began to outdo all the young men, he was too proud of her to tell her, much less forbid her from training in the ring. So, he just put it off. After all, who would know as long as she never left the rancho? Salvador could not imagine a day when his Joaquina would want to do that.
The greater her talent grew, the more guilt he felt...and the more guilt he felt, the more he took it out on Joaquina in the corrida, where he pushed her ever harder, perhaps hoping she would quit. She was no quitter. No, she was driven to be the best, so she took all the abuse and insults he gave out and pushed herself past all limits of training, endurance, and training.
Until finally, one day during a training session, the day in which our story begins, he humiliates her in front of the entire hacienda, and Joaquina vows to leave home forever! Salvador thinks this will blow over like all the other storms between them...but, no, not this time.
So, Joaquina and her younger brother LUPE arrive by train in San Diego, California, on V-J Day 1945 amidst the huge and chaotic American End-Of-The-War celebration. As Joaquina and Lupe make their way through the champagne-soaked bedlam, a strange man forces Joaquina onto a sailboat in the nearby yacht harbor, where he attempts to rape her.
After a day and night of the most incredible party in history JACK HADLEY, a wealthy young American sailor/vagabond, staggers slightly along the floating boardwalk, then steps aboard his sailboat and discovers the scene of the attempted rape.
Matadora is the compelling story of these two Mexican runaways, Joaquina and Lupe, as they begin a new life in post-war California, a place and time where anything can happen, where any dream can come true, and where it might even be possible for a girl from obscurity such as Joaquina to become a great bullfighter...and still find time for love.
