Night Critters Play Kindle Edition
by Eesseboe Kwami Nyamidie (Author), Pamela Christiansen (Illustrator)
As the moon rises and many creatures lay down their heads, nocturnal life awakens to its turn to explore the world in velvety darkness. From bugs to owls to crocodiles, many animals venture out into the world at night. Whether stalking prey or avoiding detection, darkness is the perfect place for these creatures to exist. As the night progresses, more and more characters make their appearance, ultimately finding their way back home again as the sun begins to rise.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Nyamidie's poetry generally scans well, and some phrases are wonderfully lyrical: "The Milky Way loses all her freckles. / The drowsy leopard stretches her speckles." Some stanzas switch the pattern, however, making it hard to find end rhymes; parents may need to read the book aloud a few times before finding the rhythm for bedtime reading. Christiansen's gorgeously layered monotype prints evoke the mysterious nighttime world; her owl against the Milky Way could easily be a framed print. Young listeners and newly independent readers will find fun new vocabulary words, both in the poetry (anthems, moon-banished) and in the context of natural science (on the first page, a "pupa curls up in her cozy cocoon").
A visually appealing work that lap readers will want to look at again and again." Kirkus Indie Reviews
"Ideal as a read aloud, this book connects readers to the power of poetry to describe the world in great detail using a limited quantity of words. The visual component of both the illustrations and the text provide a compelling backdrop for readers, engaging them in the story no matter their reading ability. Because the rhymes vary in their pattern throughout the story, careful consideration will be required to effectively present this story aloud. This is an excellent addition to poetry collections for young readers." Mary R. Lanni, MLIS, professional book reviewer with over 500 published reviews since 2015.

"As I read over , 'Night Creatures Play', I loved many things about how the book focuses on kid-based science topics, as well as the poetry. It has a really nice rhyme scheme. It also has a great overview of both night- and day-time animals of all types: insects, birds, mammals and reptiles; even including a number of lesser-known species... I think educators at many levels could find this book useful in their classrooms." Greg Lange, 25+ year teacher at grade levels Pre- K through Adult HS Completion...Edmonds School District, WA State.
"Teachers will refer to this book [not only ] for its descriptive verbs but also for illustration techniques. ... Illustrator Pamela B. Christiansen supplies us with full-page, stylized artwork that will have children looking for the animal or insect's image amongst leaves and grasses...Author Esseboe Kwami Nyamidie paints a picture with his descriptive and rhyming text that children—and parents—will enjoy reading. I think every school and public library should have Night Critters Play on the shelf for its descriptive poem and unusual illustration style." From the Author
This short bedtime story book project started several years ago. I was fortunate to have met Pamela B. Christiansen. An accomplished print-maker, Christiansen spent close to a year to create the unique illustrations for Night Critters Play. She used a printmaking technique called monotype. Monotypes are valued for their unique textural characteristics.
Night Critters Play is a labor of love. It is dedicated to my friend and partner, Michele T. Plumb Stowell, (1966-2021) an early childhood teacher. She died of colon cancer five days after the book's release. "Tons of love, Miss. May your love, kindness and compassion for all and for children in particular be forever remembered." --This text refers to the paperback edition.
