Author Tip to Creating Unique and Exciting Characters

APRIL 19, 2019

Happy Friday! This week flew by for me as I was involved in a television interview, I visited a friend, held a Meet and Greet, and prepared to go on vacation on a cruise. Oh, Happy Day! I finally am going to get on board the Royal Princess and sail away.

I love cruising and I love to write while I am on a cruise. I get inspired. Also, I get to people watch which is a bonus because I take a small writing tablet and start describing interesting people and couples that I see and develop characters around them. As an author, it is our characters that drive and propel a story. Therefore, I can't miss opportunities and not pick up on mannerisms, gates, dress styles, flirtation techniques and more. Therefore, my author tip for today is to take opportunities when you travel to "People Watch." Always jot down what they do, how they move, how the dress and more. When you get ready to create new characters, you have an arsenal at your disposal, I do the same thing with places I go and jot down how they smelled, the unique noises and the sites around them. Again, when you write, you can tap into your notes for inspiration.

Meet Rafael Humphrey

Today's author is Rafael Humphrey. I am excited to introduce him to you because he and I have several things in common -- we are both authors and come from a music background. When we tap into our skill sets as authors, the world opens up and there isn't anything that we can't write about. I was a teacher and principal during my early years and I tapped into that when I wrote numerous educational books. I also have tapped into my hobby of drawing and have created six adult coloring books. When an author does as I have done, it allows readers to learn from our experiences and that is precisely what Rafael Humphrey has done in his book Quit Your Job, Live Off the Music. Meet author, Rafael Humphrey.

Tell your readers a little about yourself, where you grew up, where you live now, where you went to school etc. Let them get to know the personal you.

I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio that’s where I was born and raised, but I have traveled all over the world. All my schooling was in Cincinnati. Even though I traveled to New York and Los Angeles a lot, I am still a Midwest boy. I didn’t get into music until a couple of years after high school I was a baseball all my life. I started out producing than writing then turned to an artist then consulting.

What inspired you to write this book?

My inspiration to write the book was from me being in the music business and consulting for up and coming indie musicians they would always ask me questions about the business, so I said how bout I put it in a book for you all.

Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?

When I did the Book cover, I wanted to have something that represented work as of a 9to5 job and something that showed what you could be doing in music — also showing the resignation letter confirming that you quit the job.

Who has been the biggest influence on you personally and as a writer?

My biggest influence has been all the greats I see on Youtube and on Vimeo and that I read about they get me to saying keep working hard.

What were your struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get this book written? One big obstacle I had to overcome is balancing everyday life while writing the book. So I had to write most of the book on airplanes because that’s the only place I couldn’t move around and do other things that come with life.

Tell your readers about your book.

My book will break down step by step of your process of how you can start making a living from your music; this is more like a self-help guide. Quitting your job seems a little bit overboard, but we have all the answer.

COMING SOON

Who is your target audience and why?

My target audience is anyone who is wanting to learn how to make a living off music any age any gender.

If you were going to give one reason for anyone looking at your book to read, why should they buy it?

This book is a must buy because just to read it gives you the info for the time being but you will always have to go back to it for reference of your step to step guide so you want it for life.

What do you consider your greatest success in life?

I consider when I hit the Billboard charts as a producer for the first time is one of my greatest achievement in life.

Everyone has life lessons to learn, tell your readers one or two of yours and how they make you the person you are today.

One life lesson I learned in life is that no matter how hard you got it someone in the world has it worst. That helped me to realize I have it good no matter what.

What one unique thing sets you apart from other writers in your genre?

One thing that sets me apart from other writers in this genre is I'm not going to use any terminology that you won’t understand. I have done just about everything an indie artist has done so I know where you are coming from I am also in it to help you not only to sell books.

Tell your readers anything else you want to share.

On the release of the book, we will have a great book tour where we will be coming to a city near you.
