Review
"Dark, disturbing, and sharp-edged... A thoroughly gripping collection." -- Prairies Book Review
Joseph C. Gioconda along with Grace Elizabeth, Amy Yun Yu, Isabel Rincón, Petar Vrbich, and others delves into the dark, brutal world of death and mystery in his grim latest, a collection of short stories. Gioconda's stories, which form the major part of the collection, feature ordinary characters and their extraordinary circumstances, interweaving darkness and death with accounts of heartbreak, murder, longing, and uncertainty ("Convertible," "Teeth," "Identity," and "Confession").
The authors adeptly tap into the characters' minds, bringing out their deepest emotions of shock, insecurities, fear, and rage. Longing, uncertainty, and disquiet all play a role. "Bedroom" is an unsettling story of a young boy's encounters with dead souls. Heartbreaking and devastating, "Lured," narrates the tale of an unfortunate young family. Many of the stories in this collection are not outright scary, but the situations and the sentences that describe the characters' interactions are dismal and disconcerting. The accompanied illustrations are impressive. With its diverse range of stories, including many chillers and a few dark human dramas, this page-turner will equally please the readers of dark fiction and horror aficionados.
