What inspired you to author this book?

I wanted to know, how can I take what I’ve learned about planning and managing
excellence, and marry it with my deepest beliefs and core values? How can I plan for a life that yields not only material success but also expresses what matters the most to me?

So, in 2001, I started journaling like a madman. It started out as a prayer journal, just me recording the cries of my heart. I wrote out my hopes and dreams. I asked myself what my needs and wants were, and what direction I wanted to go. I was in a deeply spiritual place, overjoyed to have the space to let my soul do some stretching out and breathing deeply.

Before long, around April of that year, the inveterate planner I’d always been started
expressing himself loudly on the pages of my journal. Prayers were becoming lists; rambling thoughts gave way to graphs. Something was taking shape before my eyes.

Through writing about what I needed and wanted out of life, I organically produced a
list of areas in my life that, when put together, created a striking acronym: F.I.R.E.S.

Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?

The red and white logo/theme colors serve as a "warning" that we only have a short time on this earth to become our best version of ourselves.

Continuous improvement and refinement is a life-long process. They are represented by the hottest of the flames... blue. When all flame colors combine, the hottest color is white-blue.

Who has been the most significant influence on you personally and as a writer?

Debra Benton, the author of 13+ books on CEO presence and executive leadership. I was honored that she wrote the Forward of my first book!

What were your struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get this book written?

I originally documented the idea (via journal entries) in April 2001, but didn't publish it until November 2017. I developed 3-ring binders and small group church meetings to refine my ideas and help others with their personal improvement/transformation journey.

Tell your readers about your book.

In five distinct but interrelated arenas of our lives -- the spiritual, the external (i.e., our broader communities), the relational, the internal (i.e., the personal), and the financial -- we feel overworked yet unclear about our purpose.

In F.I.R.E.S., Fortune 500 veteran Daniel Purdy takes readers on a step-by-step journey to personal transformation, professional growth, and multi-faceted success through harnessing life's fires.

The F.I.R.E.S. system leverages the best planning processes from Purdy's corporate background and the latest thinking around holistic health and meaningful success.

It's a self-coaching system that balances practical concerns with personal values, and incisive strategy with insight and soul.
