How to Answer as a Freelancer when Someone Wants you to Work for Less

As a freelanacer, I always get asked to lower my prices. I have struggled for years to explain why I don't lower my prices. I finally came up with a definite answer.

Dear Buyer:

I appreciate your interest in my work and your proposal. However, I can't accept the job at half the standard rate. Here are a few reasons why:

1. Quality: My rates reflect the quality of work I deliver. I put significant time, energy, and effort into ensuring each project I undertake is completed to a high standard.

2. Value of Experience: The rates I charge also reflect my experience, skills, and expertise in this field. I have worked in the publishing industry for two decades.  I offer services that stand out for their precision, insight, and impact.

3. Fair Market Rate: It's important to maintain industry standards and the fair market rate for freelancers. This ensures that professionals can continue to provide high-quality services and contribute to a healthy, competitive business environment.

4. Sustainability: Lastly, accepting work at significantly lower rates undermines the sustainability of my business. Like any professional, I have overheads to cover, and I need to ensure that the fees I charge can sustain my business in the long term.

Again, I value your interest in my services, and I look forward to finding a solution that works for both of us.

Thank you for your understanding.
