"Made of Magic and True Grit" by Landry-Daniel Lie

Never in my life did I expect to be under a stay at home order during a global pandemic. Things like that only happen in the movies. Not any more. We as a world population are all being changed and our lives will never be the same. That doesn't necessarily mean that's a bad thing. Our world can use more compassion and I sincerely hope that is the outcome for all of us. I don't want to add to the frenzy of it all, rather, I want to help bring a calmness. We all can do our part by listening to our leaders and the medical experts.

During this time, it is also essential that we address our children's needs. Their education doesn't stop because school is out. Now, every child in a stay at home order or lockdown is now homeschooled. There is simplicity is this in a weird sort of way as it gives us ample opportunity to share with them, do family activities with them, and to read to and with them. So for all of us who are sitting at home trying to fill our days, I have a wonderful book for you today. "Made of Magic and True Grit," by Landry-Daniel Lie is brilliant and provides the reader with a chance to escape to a magical land. The main character, Pinly, is a young fairy, who is in for the unexpected. I hope you enjoy the escapism this book holds.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Made of Magic and True Grit (The wingless Book 1) Kindle Edition

A story about fairies, far from a fairy tale...

Pinly leads a simple life as a young fairy, but that peaceful existence is thrown into chaos when his city is attacked by a silver soldier and his army.

As the world around him grapples with this frightening new reality, turmoil turns to heartache when Pinly’s brother is kidnapped, leaving him completely alone as unrest unfolds.

Left with no other options, Pinly attempts the impossible. Despite his inferior magic, he leaves the confines of his once safe city for the first time, with the determination to find his brother by any means necessary.

With hidden worlds, powerful creatures, terrifying beasts, and formidable opponents waiting at every turn, Pinly is in over his head. Will his dogged determination be enough to secure his brother’s safe return?

Time, though short, will tell if magic and true grit are enough.

Tell your readers a little about yourself, where you grew up, where you live now, where you went to school etc. Let them get to know the personal you.

I am an Ivorian-French writer based in London, UK. I studied media, where I confirmed my love for writing. After traveling for two years and finding inspiration in all corners of the world, I wrote my first book entitled Made of Magic and true grit.

What inspired you to author this book?

“Made of Magic and True Grit” is a mix of everything that influenced me growing up. In my hometown, Orleans, France, there is a colossal statue of Joan of Arc to continually see her, and being told about her story profoundly influenced the topic of my stories, including made of magic and true grit. Writing this book was therapy.  My hero goes through many things that I went through -- like the loss of a parent, and his relationship with his brother is very much like the one I have with my closest brother. My travels were also a big influence on my writing; the people I met the places I've seen. From Taiwan to Brasil to Sweden and Ivory Coast, all those places show in my writing.

Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?

The cover didn't always look like that. It went through so many drafts. I had my characters all over the cover before, then beasts and all sorts of overwhelming drawings, but in the end, I wanted it to be simple. I think the title says enough about the book. Although not a fairy tale, the creatures in my book are found in those, so I wanted the design to pay homage to those great books we all read or heard about growing up when the covers were beautifully embossed with gold drawings.

Who has been the most significant influence on you personally and as a writer?

I wouldn't say there was one person in particular, but many, from fictional to everyday people.

What were your struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get this book written?

This is the first book I intended on publishing so the main thing for me was trying to ignore all the doubts I had about my writing. I delayed publishing for a while because of that. I am definitely happy and confident about the finished product.

Who is your target audience, and why?

I wrote the book for a young adult audience, they are the ones who would relate the most with the main character, the way he behaves and reacts to everything that happens.

What do you consider your greatest success in life?

This book, without a doubt. It's been such a long process in which I've learned so much.

What one unique thing sets you apart from other writers in your genre?

Although embellished with magic, what I write are things that happen every day to so many people around the world, having been exposed to so many different cultures from a very young age, it shows in my writing and make my writing that much more colorful.
