When Jack comes home to find a bullet placed on his doormat he isn't surprised. He knows why it's waiting for him. Only 18, he has had to live on his own for years, using what he could to get by. He's supported himself in ways that would shock those who knew him as a kind boy, with a loving family, living in a rich beach town in L. A.. He'll have to out find who left the bullet and what danger lurks. And he'll have to find himself as well. Is he the boy he was once was, or the young man he has had to become?
The peril doesn't care, it moves against him regardless. But what's the point of continuing on if everything he does removes him further and further away from who he is supposed to be?
Jack will have to decide what's worthwhile. How far he'll need to push himself before nothing redeemable remains of him, if it's not already too late? He clings to what he can for now, and hopes something of value will help fill a life with not much more than sex and drugs, and friends who celebrate those things but don't have any of the worries that Jack does. Otherwise Jack will have to consider all the ways he can escape.
The ocean beckons as it always has. Whether it's surfing with his father or swimming with a girl he loves above all others, but one that will no longer speak to him. The water is a constant in his life and at the very definition of who he is supposed to be. The Pacific Ocean was named after peace and peace can take many forms. Sink or swim. What choice does he have? This isn't what was supposed to happen, and as the story unfolds we learn why.
