Finding a Space in Life: Fearlessly journey to face the past to design a better future Kindle Edition

by Jasmine Bailey  (Author)

Finding a Space in Life is a book about a young woman’s journey of looking at her family history after a suggestion from a mentor. There is an ah-ha moment that happened for the author and a concept/model was created called Healthy By Design (HBD). This model is a practical tool that the author began using to connect the unknown spaces from her past to create a deliberate healthier future. This book isn’t about theory without practice. There is work that must be done in order to live a life that is intentional, deliberate, and healthy. The hope is that readers will be able to take-a-way life design or re-design tools and strategies to create their own HBD story.

Finding a Space in Life

Tell your readers a little about yourself, where you grew up, where you live now, where you went to school etc. Let them get to know the personal you.

I grew up in Detroit, Michigan, with my four sisters, Mom and Dad. I currently reside in the Metro Detroit area. We all attended private Christian schools through high school. I have an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Central Michigan University and a graduate degree in Training and Development from Oakland University. Aside from my formal education, I consistently develop myself by investing in personal and professional growth courses and workshops. This is something that I use to do to “fix” myself. Now I have a different perspective. The person that I am is more important than what I do. I now approach learning from a place of curiosity, discovery, as well as fun.

What inspired you to author this book?

I wrote this book after a suggestion from a mentor to look at my family history to possibly make a connection to how I want to live my life moving forward. It caused me to ask questions and look at details of my life that I had not really thought about as it related to how I made decisions and currently lived. I was challenged to face unknown parts of my life. This also connected a piece of work that I created before writing the book. There is a model/concept that I introduce, called Healthy By Design. (By is supposed to be capitalized). I hope that the book can be a resource for anyone who has questions on how to have a clearer vision for their life and purpose in life.

Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?

The inspiration comes from the connection that I find with HGTV home renovation shows. I really enjoy watching the designers and experts transform a space/place into something totally different. I believe in life that this is something we have the power to do. I wanted to have the reader’s eye be drawn to the possibility or beauty of the space on the cover.

Who has been the most significant influence on you personally and as a writer?

I do not have an answer for this question.

What were your struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get this book written?

One struggle that I had was when I brought in the topic of my racial ancestry in the book. I initially thought that it wasn’t something that is well received, and I have learned to be silent on the subject of race. But I decided not to continue the cyclical pattern of silence that I had been socialized to accept as normal. I also struggled with the idea of publishing the details of my family history for others to see. As I saw different patterns of silence and conformity, I knew that I would have to get past this struggle by telling the truth of my story.

Who is your target audience, and why?

For anyone who hasn’t connected their past with the present day to provide a map or strategy for a better future, this book would be beneficial. This isn’t a magical formula, and it isn’t for the faint of heart. For the person who is done with excuses and willing to put in the work to achieve a different outcome—this is for them. It is directed to people who have been in the Christian faith and may have been jaded by religious activity. African-American individuals and families in the Christian faith are also an ideal market. This isn’t limited to Black Americans, I speak from a personal perspective and I did not want to muzzle the topic of race. This is a factor for me that I chose not to ignore. My friends from different races have read the book and have enjoyed reading it. It has caused a different dialogue within our friendship and connection.

What do you consider your greatest success in life?

The greatest success in my life is leaving a religious connection to Christ and encountering a relational connection style with Him. This has caused an internal freedom from attempting to gain external validation.

What one unique thing sets you apart from other writers in your genre?

I have worked in various industries: non-profit, higher education, churches, corporate. My observation of people in different industries is that people seek to be loved, accepted, and want to matter. Making this connection has allowed me to listen beyond surface-level conversations and help create spaces and environments where healthy relationship skills can be learned, developed, practiced, and thrive.
