The Kafir: the unbeliever Kindle
Edition
by Abigail Rook (Author)
A deadly epidemic erupts,
but it seems to be under control quickly.
Carolin Falkenberg, a microbiologist at the Robert Koch
Institute in Berlin, sees a chance to finally advance her career--or at least
her habilitation thesis on the Ebola virus.
She is flying to Zimbabwe on behalf of the WHO to inspect the
situation there. What she finds on the scene leaves her increasingly doubtful
that everyone is playing with open cards. A mysterious Facebook post in a
virologist group also poses a riddle. Is someone trying to contact her in
encrypted form?
A game of lies, intrigue, and betrayal unfolds and brings the
world to the brink of disaster.

Tell your readers a little about
yourself, where you grew up, where you live now, where you went to school etc.
Let them get to know the personal you.
Abgail Rook is a pseudonym of a team of German authors
consisting of father and daughter. We live on the coast of the Baltic Sea.
Elisabeth is a very talented writer who won several contests.
She is still attending high school.
Andreas is a medical doctor, head of a department at a university hospital, and
a passionate cyclist and hobby programmer.
What inspired you to author this book?
“The Kafir" is a story about a virus outbreak in Zimbabwe
that is not what it seems. We wrote the manuscript way before the Corona crisis
and even hesitated to release it since we did not want to scare people. The
plot is pure fiction with a profound scientific background.
Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?
We both like a purist design language based on schemes and
symbols. That’s why we are very satisfied with the cover, which was designed by
a Swiss artist. It is beautiful, isn’t it?
Who has been the most significant influence on you personally
and as a writer?
Andreas was mainly influenced by the works of Stephen King with
which he grew up. Above all, he loves “On Writing: King’s Memoir of the Craft.”
Elisabeth’s role model is probably Teri Terry. She binge-read all her books,
and of course, William Ritter’s Jackaby, from whom she borrowed our
pseudonym.
What were your struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get
this book written?
We finished the book within four months, so no struggling here.
The harder part was to sell the book, but we managed a successful launch in
Germany with several thousand copies sold so far (and we are very proud of
this!)
Due to a coincidence, we found an American editor who helped us
with translation and proofreading, so we decided to give it a go and take “the
big step over the pond” (a German saying. The “pond” is the Atlantic ocean)

We hope, the blurb says
it all:
“What if the deadliest weapon ever created on earth falls into the hands of
someone who hates?
Will we survive?”

Who is your target audience, and why?
The educated, politically interested reader with a liberal attitude, who loves realistic and yet exciting thrillers.
What do you consider your greatest success in life?
Andreas: not having lost
the belief in the good in people.
Elisabeth: still having a great relationship with my dad, although he is my
hardest critic.
What one unique thing sets you apart from other writers in your genre?
We combine the spirit of two generations: the knowledge and wisdom of the older with the creativity and unconcern of youth.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Abigail Rook is the pseudonym of a team of authors consisting of father and daughter. We write fantasy, contemporary, and thrillers, but also like to write short stories of all kinds.
Elisabeth has been writing mainly fantasy, youth crime, and mystery stories for several years.
Andreas edits and reworks, sometimes he writes himself, then preferably thriller, coming-of-age and science fiction. His profession (medical doctor) and his hobby (software programming) are usually the theme-determining elements of the stories.
